Seuss Landing theme park, Orlando, Florida

Seuss Landing – the bold, brash side of Orlando at Universal Studios

Walt Disney's Florida theme parks are America's top honeymoon destination and it isn't hard to see why. The four theme parks are all quite different but each one offers multiple attractions which cross the generations with thrill rides, spectacular live shows and interactive exhibits. Walt Disney World brings out the child in everyone, but it can also stretch you to the limits.

The original Disney park – Magic Kingdom – is still a must-see with its daily musical parade, white-knuckle thrills and that famous Cinderella castle. Disney-MGM Studios recreates the magic of the movies with shows, rides and backstage tours. Epcot provides the showcase for science and world cultures. And the Animal Kingdom combines live animals with a serious conservation message.

Theme park entrance fees can seem pricey at first but they do include all the attractions right through to the late-night firework displays. Combination tickets work out cheaper if you're planning to visit a number of parks, so check them out and book ahead.

But Orlando isn't just about Disney. We couldn't wait to visit SeaWorld – home to killer whales, manatees and all kinds of beguiling creatures, not to mention some of the most spectacular marine shows you are likely to see anywhere. SeaWorld has its own roller coaster and water flume. Queues tend to be shorter here than in other parks. Still worth arriving early, though, and hitting the rides first.

Islands of Adventure – a sister attraction for the original Universal Studios park – is the last word in state-of-the-art rides and simulator experiences. The Jurassic Park log flume was so good I did it twice – but left the upside-down loops of the roller coasters to the others.

But having fun can be tiring, so a self-catering villa provides the perfect opportunity to relax in the heat of the day. Just make sure you get your hand stamped before leaving the park if you want to return later.

Florida villas are spacious, well equipped and air conditioned, and there's no need to do much catering: everybody eats out in Florida because it's such good value. Portions are enormous – two plates of breakfast pancakes proved plenty for the four of us. Nobody minds if you share. And whether you've ordered a Coke or a coffee, refills come free.

All styles of cuisine are on offer, but remember that the legal age for drinking alcohol in Florida is 21 and that it's strictly enforced. Parents can be prosecuted for attempting to buy booze for under-age offspring and staff always checked we were buying beers for ourselves and not for our teenage son.
